What Makes Us Different

The Davis Center is a unique, one-of-a-kind center and is recognized as the world's premier sound therapy center. There are differences between the terms 'sound healing', 'sound therapy' and 'sound-based therapy'. Sound healing--Uses tones, mantras, various rhythms and sound patterns, and other sounding techniques to support change with the body's energy patterns. Sound therapy--Uses specific notes of the musical scales to make change with the body's energy patterns usually with a sounding source. Sound-based therapy--Uses sound vibration with special equipment, specific programs, modified music, and/or specific tones/beats, the need for which is identified with appropriate testing. Sound-based therapy fits under the term sound therapy so The Davis Center is considered a sound therapy center.

Ms. Davis' background in both educational and rehabilitative audiology as well as her background as a teacher are important components within The Davis Model of Sound Intervention® because her knowledge of sound, education, learning in general, and development are all blended into how the process works. She did not just learn and train in 20 different sound-based therapies. She evaluated how each therapy process worked with The Tree analogy and began to recognize the importance of how the therapies support each other for maximum benefit.

Her early non-published research with the acoustic reflex and central auditory processing skills helped identify that sound-based therapies can make change physiologically and perceptually. Her quest to find the further connections between the voice, the ear and the brain all support a unique perspective on how the body receives and emits sound. She is recognized as the foremost specialist in sound-based therapy because of how she integrates the various therapies into her Davis Model.  Her book Sound Bodies through Sound Therapy is considered the most comprehensive book on sound-based therapy. When new therapies are introduced, the developer typically seeks out Ms. Davis to determine where on The Tree of Sound Enhancement Therapy® their specific therapy fits.

Dr. Alfred Tomatis is considered to be the Founder of Sound Therapy; and Ms. Davis has taken the concept that there is a connection between the voice, the ear, and the brain to a more advanced level. Her presentation of "The Davis Addendum® to The Tomatis Effect" at the Acoustical Society of America in 2004 opened the door for the next level of understanding about the impact of vibrational sound on the body, and specifically that the voice produces what the ear hears and the ear emits the same stressed frequencies as the voice. If those two processes are balanced, the voice regains coherence and the person is functioning from a more balanced position.

Sound-based therapies should not just include listening to programs. When a program is at The Trunk of The Tree and is a Listening Training Program, the therapy must include active voice work, meaning the use of a microphone through a special device to actively work the connection between the voice, the ear, and the brain The goal of which, is better cohesion between these three systems. There are many existing programs that feel they incorporate The Tomatis Effect but the effect is only in place when the ability to monitor one's voice and ear is built into the program.

Ms. Davis has designed a Diagnostic Evaluation for Therapy Protocol (DETP®) which incorporates all the components of The Tree of Sound Enhancement Therapy. No other center has permission to use this test battery within their procedures. Many centers say that they incorporate The Tree analogy but cannot possibly understand the interpretation of how the processes integrate themselves without the specific test data obtained from the test battery. Until such time as Ms. Davis can put the test battery into a shared format, the only place to obtain the testing is at The Davis Center in Succasunna, NJ or at an Off-Site Testing Outreach where Ms. Davis has agreed to do testing.

Ms. Davis has designed her testing so that she can work with people of all ages and all disabilities. The staff at The Davis Center are supportive, caring, and knowledgeable in many areas. Each was trained by Ms. Davis as well as in the specialty sound-based therapies they are responsible for.

A major advancement in how the sound-based therapies can be administered are the exceptional technological improvements in home-based sound therapy methods. We now offer not only in-office therapies where Berard AIT and The Tomatis® Method are administered but also home programs appropriate at each level of The Tree can now be utilized. It is so easy to now receive sound-based therapy. No longer must our clients travel daily long distances or incur significant hotel fees to receive therapy. The costs have significantly come down!

The Davis Center is one of a kind! We evaluate the whole person by evaluating the processes between the voice, the ear and the brain. It is not the therapy alone, the diagnosis alone, or the emphasis on one sensory modality or specific skill that we promote. Instead, we strive to support change for the entire body to work better and in better harmony. By repatterning the body's natural form and function, each client has the potential for improved learning, and development, as well as being able to maintain their wellness. Ms. Davis incorporates her knowledge of audiology, education and sound therapy into a unique process and provides the foundation for the future growth of sound therapy. You can begin the process now!
