The Listening Program™ (TLP)
- What is The Listening Program™ (TLP)?
- The Listening Program™ is a home-based, sound stimulation, auditory training method. By combining unique psychoacoustic techniques with specially arranged music and nature sounds, The Listening Program™ exercises the ear and brain. These auditory aerobics facilitate improvement in auditory tonal processing, which is demonstrated by improved learning and behavior. This method builds on The Tomatis Method (Tomatis®).
- Who can benefit from The Listening Program™ (TLP)?
- Children and adults with sound sensitivities, hearing loss, learning and attention deficits, receptive and expressive language problems, perceptual difficulties, developmental delays, and other auditory processing problems. The program may also benefit individuals working to improve communication skills, musical abilities, and learning potential.
- Why does The Listening Program™ (TLP) work?
- By listening to these strategically combined sounds, millions of neurons in various locations of the brain are awakened to help make sense of what is being heard. One's appetite for sound is engaged and the desire to listen comes alive. This is active listening, which means being fully aware of what is being heard; moving beyond passive hearing into a state of auditory attention.
As natural listening increases, so does language and communication skills, attention span, and concentration. Steady progress in reading, spelling, handwriting, motor control, speech, self-esteem, and motivation have been demonstrated. The perception of sound becomes the doorway to changes in many areas of one's life.
- What does The Listening Program™ (TLP) involve?
- The program involves wearing a set of headphones and listening to two 15-minute segments of specially developed CDs per day, 5 days a week (with two consecutive days off), for a period of 8 weeks. There are weekly reading assignments and daily journal entries to receive the full benefit of this program.
- Why use The Davis Center?
- While The Listening Program™ is a substantial stand-alone sound stimulation experience, it is also used to enhance the effectiveness of other sound based therapies. The integration of this program before, during and after other therapies provided at The Davis Center may promote deeper and more rapid change in auditory processing. In some cases, The Listening Program™ will be used as a continuation program to maintain and further enhance existing therapy outcomes. The staff can evaluate when The Listening Program™ can be used most effectively in the client's progress.
