Sound Therapy For Wellness Interview with Dorinne S. Davis, Audiologist By Christine Rock
N.V.M.: What is Bio-Acoustics?
D.D.: BioAcoustics means ''Life Sounds'' and it is the study of the energy level, or frequencies, within our bodies and how they impact us in everyday life. All of us are essentially core beings that are made up of cells and energy. Each of us have integrated the energies and our cell usage in our organs and all other body parts to work together in their own unique way. BioAcoustics enables us to look at the frequencies that we are emitting and to look at how our cells are connecting one to the other and what we have built up as layers over layers over the years. BioAcoustics treatment can then be used to adjust our frequencies and energies and the cell levels as needed to decrease some of the impact of those layers that have developed so we can get back to our true core body.
N.V.M.: How was it discovered?
D.D.: BioAcoustic was discovered by a woman named Sharry Edwards. Sharry was going for her master's degree and she mentioned to one of her professors that she was hearing these sounds. This led her to meet with an audiologist who asked her if she could produce the sound that she was hearing. She replied that she could and when she did the audiologist collapsed. What was discovered later was that Sharry produced the perfect sound that would reduce a person's blood pressure and this audiologist had high blood pressure. His blood pressure lowered so rapidly that he collapsed. Sharry can produce with her voice a pure sine wave and as far as we know she is the only person in the world who can do this. From that one incident a new science had a possible beginning. Sharry can hear sounds that people emit. Coincidentally, at the time she started this science in the early 70's another person discovered that we do produce oto-acoustics and that the ear is not just for hearing it also makes a sound. Sharry used this knowledge and researched Tomatis' Method that states ''the voice produces what the ear hears'' and she was able to start looking at the sounds that she heard from people and figuring out the different frequencies for everything. It wasn't until five years ago that her method of discerning frequencies was put into a computer program.
N.V.M.: How does this process work? I remember that when I was tested I spoke into a microphone like I was talking on a telephone and almost immediately afterwards I was shown a kind of computer generated graph that represented my voice.
D.D.: We take a 44 second voice print and it produces a picture that we call time domain frequency responses. We are only looking for the frequency energy that is emitted from their voice. We take this information from the voice print analysis and put it into a specialized computer program and we identify certain frequencies that we describe as ''stressed.'' The stress could mean there is too much of something in the body or there is too little of something in the body. Also, because we are able to encompass the eleven octaves of sound in this time domain frequency analysis picture we might find that a certain sound is missing for that person. The analysis is very comprehensive. We are able to identify stresses as represented by toxins in the body, nutritional components, biochemical issues like amino acids, cell salts, enzymes, fatty acids, vitamins and hormones. We can identify medicines, drugs, and stresses for organs, muscles and vertebra. Looking at the types of stresses that are identified is important because some things are not beneficial if there is too much of it in the body and some things are not beneficial if there is too little.
N.V.M.: I believe an example of the high amount of something not being beneficial is what I see as a startling high amount of antihistamines in my print out especially since I almost never take antihistamines. From what I have learned so far about this science I believe my body has stored the molecular representation for antihistamines and maybe that finally explains why I started having serious allergic reactions to them a few years ago.
D.D.: Let's look at another situation. If a vitamin is identified as missing then no matter how much of that vitamin that you ingest your body does not know what to do with it and it will be flushed right through. According to Sharry's research the way to approach that situation is to introduce that vitamin through sound and take additional supplements to make your body use it better.
N.V.M.: One of the most outstanding patterns in my voice print results was the long list of toxins and pesticides. I have strong reason to believe they were introduced to my body when I was exposed to these toxins and chemicals when I was a child as a military dependent and when I was in the military as an adult. According to my VA doctor I have the same long term symptoms as the Persian Gulf War Veterans and it is widely believed that these disabling symptoms were created by the inoculations that were administered. Maybe that would make for an excellent case study.
D.D.: Yes it would. What we are discovering and what we believe has happened in situations like yours with the pesticides and other toxins is that so many people need to de-tox. Those toxins have somehow attached themselves to you internally at that particular time and you were unable to get rid of them. With some of our patients who are children with autism we are seeing pages and pages of toxins. We had a little girl who is autistic and over time as she listened to her well-being sounds we were able to bring out some of the toxins.
N.V.M.: What is the treatment process?
D.D.: Once we have the analysis we can find your ''Signature Sound'' which is the set of frequencies that your body represents as ones that would enhance your well being. We take the signature sound and we try out the sounds that you need by having you listen to them from a special device called a SMAD, which stands for Self Management Auditory Device. This is a device that Sharry invented. We record your responses from what you report verbally and we measure your body's temperature, pulse and oxygen rate. If someone has muscle injuries we will look at results from a muscle indicator as well. We can then determine if your body likes the sounds that we are introducing through the headphones. We identify the best series of sounds for your treatment and we program a portable tone box. You go home and you listen to these sounds for a set protocol and it is important that people follow the amount of time we set. It is not better to listen to them for longer periods of time than what we recommend. You listen to these sounds for a series of days and we ask people to contact us and keep us informed. Typically we will see you again in three months and we redo the voice analysis and we make changes to your sounds. Some people are more sensitive to the sounds so we make changes sooner than three months. Our autistic kids come in once a month. For the most part when you don't want to hear your sounds anymore we know it is time to make a change.
N.V.M.: I really enjoy my sounds. I truly feel that my body is telling me that the sounds are helping and they seem to be filling a big need, almost like a gap. What is the nature of the sounds?
D.D.: Each sound that you listen to is two sounds that work together to help your body to know what it needs. As you are hearing the sounds and sending them to your brain it is getting your brain and the cells of your body entrained to recognize those sounds.
N.V.M.: These sounds are at a brain wave level?
D.D.: Yes. When I use other sound therapies like Tomatis I am using more high frequency sounds. The BioAcoustic sounds go down to a brain wave multiple which are some of the lowest base levels of sounds that your body is going to react to.
N.V.M.: Who would be a candidate for this kind of treatment?
D.D.: I will say anyone who wants to improve their well being. We are getting wonderful results with muscle and back injuries. This is so ideal for fitness centers who can send people to us for things like pulled muscles, twisted and sprained ankles. With the use of sound we can help them to heal faster because we are able to strengthen the muscle through sound. We have a variety of people we are helping now. My mother had severe fibromyalgia and she was bedridden last year and we thought she might have to go into a nursing home. She had broken her hip and she was constantly in pain and could not get out of bed. She was going to the chiropractor 2,3, 4 times a day, it was unbelievable. She is now up and she is more vibrant than she has been for years! She even says that it was not until she started the sounds that she really feels has made her be so vibrant again. I have a gentlemen who is a stroke victim who was in a wheelchair and now after the BioAcoustics he can walk more with a cane, he can start to control his foot and he is noticing strength in his arms.
Let me tell you Eric's story. Eric was in a car accident in 1993 and one of the reasons he is retired is because after his car accident he could no longer do anything for a long period of time without being in severe pain. When I had my first BioAcoustic training for my staff Eric participated because he was sincerely interested in learning about this technique. He had difficulty sitting for over two hours and after the fourth day he knew he had overextended himself. On the fifth day his back had completely locked and he could not even bend. We called his chiropractor who then came to our office. Eric's chiropractor told him that he had not seen him in this bad of shape since his accident and he will probably be bedridden for a week from all of the pain and recovery of the muscles. Sharry was there and she asked what were the muscles that were affected. Shortly thereafter she brought a sound device to Eric. He listened to the sounds for twenty minutes and he was able to move his hips and an hour and a half later he was pain free. He kept the sounds on and that night we were able to go out to dinner and he joined me in a three hour interview that I did with someone. A week later we went for a twelve hour ride for the level two training. In past journeys of this type Eric would have to lay down in the back of the van. This time he was able to sit up front for some of the ride. He kept his sounds on and he stayed in class all week long. He sat up front for the twelve hour ride going home. A week and a half later we left for China for a professional trip. This journey was a five hour trip to L.A., a fifteen hour trip to Hong Kong and another three hour flight to Beijing. We traveled all over China by bus touring schools and hospitals. By the time we were done with our whole trip Eric hardly needed the sounds. He was able to do the fifteen hour and five hour plane rides without his sounds. He just listened to them between flights. That was unbelievable! He was a man who was supposed to be totally bedridden! Now he just listens to his sounds when he feels he needs to.
N.V.M.: I met Eric at your expo booth in October. He was so energetic and very enthusiastic about the BioAcoustics.
D.D.: Sharry gave him sounds for his specific muscles and for his spine and spinal column. Before the BioAcoustics if Eric did a journey that lasted more than an hour he would be laid up for two days.
N.V.M.: How can people contact Sharry?
D.D.: Her website is www.sharryedwards.com. She is planning to have an online voice analysis so physicians can get some of the information for diagnostic purposes and they can then be referred to sound practitioners.
N.V.M.: My personal opinion is that the voice print would be so useful for most diagnostic situations and is as important as the standard medical lab tests.
D.D.: BioAcoustics could really compliment all existing wellness modalities.
