DAVIS CENTER PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of DAVIS CENTERS, Inc has evolved from its successes,
making positive change for clients using sound based therapies.
The founder, Dorinne S. Davis, MA, CCC-A, FAAA, with over 30 years
experience as an Educational and Rehabilitative Audiologist, has developed
a comprehensive, evaluative/diagnostic and sound based therapy protocol
based upon an individual's auditory processing and learning needs.
Not everyone needs every therapy. However, if therapies are prescribed,
it is important that they be performed in the correct sequence to achieve
maximum success.
Ms. Davis relates the levels of therapy to the life cycle of a tree.
There is a root system, the trunk, the leaves and branches, and the overall
structural maintenance of the tree. The root system pertains to the
functioning of the ear; or one's hearing. The trunk reflects the overall
auditory processing. It provides a balance between the way one processes
sound transmission through air conduction and bone conduction and
incorporates auditory processing and listening. The leaves and branches
reflect the fine tuning of specific auditory skills necessary for learning
and may include skills such as auditory memory, temporal processing,
auditory sequencing and more. Finally, the maintenance of the overall
structure of the tree corresponds to how the body maintains its positive
changes.
There are specific therapies that relate to each of the levels. The root
system is addressed by Dr. Berard's Auditory Integration Training (AIT).
This method retrains the stapedius muscle in the middle ear, thereby
affecting 'hearing'. The trunk system is addressed by the research and
method developed by Dr. Alfred Tomatis. It brings balance to the auditory
processing network using the transmission of sound via air and bone
conduction. Dr. Tomatis' Method deals with listening. At DAVIS CENTERS,
Inc., Dr. Tomatis' concepts are applied in the Listening Training Programs.
The leaves and branches are addressed by other therapies that work on
specific issues. Examples of these therapies are Fast ForWord™, which works
on temporal sequencing issues that impact language and reading; and
Earobics, which teaches specific auditory skills. Additional therapies
that use partial components of Dr. Tomatis' Method are included at this
level, i.e. The Listening Program™ and the Samonas Method. These programs
are typically used for preconditioning prior to Fast ForWord™. Finally,
the overall structural maintenance of the system is addressed with
BioAcoustics™, a program of frequency specific identification using Dr.
Tomatis' theory that the voice produces what the ear hears.
It has been consistently demonstrated by DAVIS CENTERS, Inc clients that
when a therapy protocol, based on thorough diagnosis and evaluation, is
administered in the correct sequence, positive changes have resulted.
Further, when a client has discontinued their therapy protocol, successes
have been limited. It is, therefore, important to commit to an overall
™program to achieve maximum positive change.
